Psychology and Counseling Degree Programs at the University of Louisiana Monroe

The College of Business and Social Sciences at the University of Louisiana Monroe offers several psychology programs for students today. There is a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, which is an online program. Designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge they need in psychology, it includes many different psychology courses that look at fields such as abnormal and social psychology. Students must take at least 120 credits of classes and pass a comprehensive psychology exam in their senior years.
Graduate students can earn a Master of Science in Psychology through this University of Louisiana campus, but they must pick a concentration in either forensic psychology, psychometrics or general psychology. Those in the forensic psychology program will take both psychology and criminal justice courses. The university does not require that grad students do a thesis but recommends this option for those planning on earning a doctoral degree later. Though the psychometrics and general psychology concentrations are available on the university’s campus, the forensic psychology concentration is only offered online. A Master of Science in Psychology is also available as an online program.
The College of Health Sciences at the University of Louisiana Monroe offers a Master of Science in Counseling with two emphasis areas available. One of which focuses on school psychology and allows students to pick between elementary counseling and secondary counseling. This will determine the ages of the children they counsel later. A clinical mental health counseling track prepares students for working with patients who suffer from various mental health disorders. Both of these programs require that students take required classes and electives as they also do fieldwork in counseling centers and similar facilities.

The University of Louisiana Monroe is a branch of the University of Louisiana system that has a campus in Monroe. Established in 1931 as a junior college, it then became the Northeast Center of Louisiana State University and then the Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University. As a junior college, it only offered associate’s degree programs. This changed when it separated from UL and became the Northeast Louisiana State College. That led to the college adding its own bachelor’s programs and later options for both graduate and doctoral students. The campus would later adopt the ULM name and become part of the UL system again, which helped it introduce new opportunities for students.
U.S. News and World Report often ranks ULM between 231 and 300 on its lists of the best American colleges. It also ranked the university’s online graduate and bachelor’s programs among the country’s best. Washington Monthly ranked ULM as the 290th best university in the nation. Its campus is home to a Natural History Museum that is one of the top museums in the southeast. ULM has an enrollment today that includes more than 1,300 graduate and post-graduate students and more than 7,500 undergrads.

University of Louisiana Monroe Accreditation Details
ULM can offer the financial aid packages that many people need because of the regional accreditation that it has from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This is one of the few regional accrediting agencies approved by the United States Department of Education. The university also has accreditation from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), which applies to the program that prepares students for working as counselors and therapists. Its counseling programs also have accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
University of Louisiana Monroe Application Requirements
Future ULM freshmen only need to complete a few steps and requirements to apply and start classes. They will go online and create an account on the admissions website, which they use to submit the application. The university asks for their immunization records before classes start. Prospective undergrads must also pay a $20 application fee. LUM only accepts students who completed the core curriculum for college students in Louisiana, which includes English, math, social science, life science, and foreign language classes. Incoming students should score at least 1040 on the SAT or 18 on the ACT and have a grade point average of at least 2.35 in all their high school classes.
The admissions standards for incoming graduate students are similar. These students should have a college GPA of 3.0 or higher. The university will also accept those who meet two out of three requirements: having a GPA of 2.75 or higher, scoring at least 290 on the GRE and having a score of 800 or higher when the university multiplies their scores by their grade point averages. They should also take at least nine credits of psychology courses and classes in research methods and statistics in college. Prospective grad students will submit the university’s application and provide their official transcripts too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The estimated cost of attendance for ULM undergrads is $22,000 a year for Louisiana residents who also plan on living on the campus. They’ll pay around $7,900 a year for room and board. The remaining cost of attendance includes tuition and university fees. Tuition for undergrad residents is $8,734, but the cost of tuition for nonresidents is $20,100 a year. Graduate students pay $9,058 a year as a Louisiana resident and $21,258 a year as a nonresident. ULM offers housing options for graduate students and charges a room and board rate of $7,868 per year for those students.
Undergrads who want to apply for ULM scholarships is January 31, but the university also has a foundation that will accept applications up through the end of February. Scholarships are available for both resident and nonresident undergrads and for transfer students. All students who need financial aid should also put the ULM school code on the FAFSA and submit it by the early spring. Undergrads can qualify for federal and state grants, the work-study program and federal loans. Graduate students who complete the FAFSA can also get federal loans. They may want to look at alternative loans or for assistantships too. The university asks students to complete an assistantship application and submit letters of recommendation for one of these positions. Assistantships from the University of Louisiana Monroe provide psychology and counseling majors with stipends and money for tuition.
