Counseling and Psychology Degrees Offered at Colgate University

Colgate University features three different options for individuals interested in pursuing a study in the counseling and psychology department. These programs will prepare students for immediate careers in the counseling and psychology field, or they may go on to graduate school and earn a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, counseling, or a closely related subject.
- The bachelor’s degree in psychological science is centered around the behavior of humans and animals. Students will learn about different psychological aspects, such as sensations and perceptions, memories and learning, thoughts and language, emotions and motivations, personalities, social interactions, and much more. Upon graduation, students will have gained exceptional analysis skills, which will assist them in helping address and identify human problems. The following courses are mandatory to complete the psychological science degree: Introduction to Psychological Science, Research Methods in Psychological Science, Biological Psychology, Quantitative Methods in Behavioral Research, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Social Psychology, and more. At the end of the program, students must participate in a research project on a chosen area of interest in the psychology field and will be directed by a research supervisor from start to finish.
- The bachelor’s degree in neuroscience is another degree offered by Colgate University’s Psychological and Brain Sciences Department. Students who choose to pursue this degree program will learn all about the nervous system and the brain. This program combines biology with psychology, physiology, anatomy, mathematical modeling, cytology, and more. Graduates of the program will be able to understand how the nervous system works, how it develops, and how it affects human behavior and cognitive activity. The following are some of the courses that are necessary to graduate from the neuroscience program: Introduction to Neuroscience, General Chemistry, Molecules and Genes, Quantitative Methods in Behavioral Research, Biostatistics, Biology, Behavioral Genetics, Mathematical Biology, Fundamentals of Neurophysiology, Molecular Neurobiology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Functional Neuroanatomy and Neural Development, and more. Before gaining clearance to graduate, each student must complete a research project on an area of interest in the neuroscience field. A research supervisor will oversee the student’s project from beginning to end.
- The psychological science minor is a program aimed at teaching students who desire to gain knowledge about psychological science but have already declared a different major. Students who choose to minor in psychological science must complete six courses in the field of study, which include Introduction to Psychological Science, Research Methods in Psychological Science, Biological Psychology, Quantitative Methods in Behavioral Research, and two psychology electives. Once the minor has been completed, students will have gained comprehension of complex and basic human and animal processes. In addition, students will have developed advanced analysis skills, which will aid them in pinpointing and solving a variety of human problems.

Colgate University has maintained its accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The university also has been approved and acknowledged by the New York State Education Department and the New York State Board of Regents.

Colgate University Application Requirements
Colgate University possesses an acceptance rate of 28 percent, which means it is very competitive for students to receive admittance. Individuals interested in enrolling in one of the psychology programs at this school are required to complete an application form, pay the $60 application fee, write a personal statement, submit SAT or ACT scores, turn in two letters of recommendations from high school teachers and one letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor, and provide high school transcripts.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Admitted students are required to pay $57,695 in tuition alone each year. The total estimated annual cost, including all fees, is $75,000.
Students who are unable to pay for their tuition have the option to fill out and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is an application form required by the federal government to determine if a prospective student is eligible for financial assistance and the amount they may receive. The different types of financial aid that students may be able to qualify for are state and federal grants, student loans, work-study programs, and scholarships.
