Psychology and Counseling Degree Programs Available at Barry University

Barry University offers psychology and counseling degree programs through both the Department of Psychology and the Adrian Dominican School of Education. In the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Psychology program, undergrads can study the fields of psychology that they want to focus on in graduate school and develop the strong background needed to work in social science fields. It offers volunteer opportunities for students who want to help the local community through the Psychology Club and Psi Chi.
Undergrads can choose from three specializations too: industrial/organizational psychology, forensic psychology or child and adolescent psychology. Each specialization prepares them for working in certain industries or with different groups of people. All psychology majors must take Research, which is a class that teaches them how to conduct research and critique their resources. The course includes literature reviews too. Introduction to Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology and Psychology of Learning are all required classes. Students can take courses relating to one of the specialization areas too such as Law and Psychology, Theories of Personality, Child and Adolescent Psychology and Substance Abuse.
A Master of Science (M.S.) in Psychology is available from Barry University too as either a general track or with a specialization in forensic psychology. Majors can choose a program that includes 60 credits of work or one that includes only 36 credits. The shorter program is only available for those who select the general track. All majors will do a practicum that includes 1,000 hours of fieldwork in a clinical setting with direct supervision. Barry University offers this as an evening program that includes classes scheduled for later in the day. Those classes include Advanced Developmental Psychology, Group Therapy, and Statistics and Research Design.
Also offered is an MS in Counseling that includes specializations in school counseling, clinical mental health counseling and marital, couple and family counseling. Students will do practicums at the on-site Dr. Maureen Duffy Family Enrichment Center that involves direct contact with patients. The university offers a multiple specialization tracks that allows students to take classes from two or all three of these specializations. Students take 21 credits from their specializations and the 42 credits that make up the counseling core. Classes in this core include Orientation to the Counseling Profession, Crisis Intervention, Social and Cultural Issues in Counseling and Career Development and Life-Work Planning.

Barry University is a private university affiliated with the Adrian Dominican Sisters and the Roman Catholic Church. The Adrian Dominican Sisters helped establish the university in 1940 as a woman’s college. Called the Barry College for Women in honor of Reverend Patrick Barry, it opened in Miami Shores, Florida on a lot previously filled with wild vegetation. Located on the campus is Cor Jesu Chapel, which ranks as one of the most beautiful centers for worship in the state. Now known as Barry University or just Barry, it has a flagship campus in Miami Shores and a regional campus in Tallahassee as well as a law school based in Orlando. Barry University Accreditation Details
All of the counseling programs at Barry have accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). CACREP accredits both the practicums that students do in the field and the courses that they take. With regional accreditation, Barry can grant financial aid packages to students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It holds regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Students can use this accreditation if they want to take classes and transfer to Barry or transfer from Barry to another college.
Barry University Application Requirements
Barry has summits and other on-campus events that let students learn more about its degree programs and sit in on their future classes. These events also include opportunities for students to meet with financial aid and admissions counselors. Students will complete the online application and self-report their standardized test scores. They can then have the testing agency submit an official score and ask their high schools to send in their transcripts. Barry asks for transcripts from those with a GED to show what secondary school classes they took as well as their GED scores.
The MS in Psychology program at Barry requires that students apply online and choose between the general and forensic tracks. Barry only accepts a handful of students into each track every year but may allow students to move between tracks later. They need to include a statement of purpose on the application that lists why they chose the program, the experience they have that prepared them for graduate school and why they would succeed in the program. Barry also requires an undergrad GPA of 3.0 or higher, an official transcript, a GRE score and two letters of recommendation. The university has the same requirements for students applying to the counseling programs.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergrads pay $930 per credit hour until they take 12 credits, which includes the university’s technology fee. When they take 12 to 18 credits, they pay the Barry full-time rate of $14,850 each semester. Students must pay a $60 health access fee and a $22 accident plan fee every semester too. Graduate students pay a $5 per credit hour technology fee on top of the $990 rate that they pay for their classes. Barry asks for a $200 deposit if students want to live on-campus and charges them a minimum of $3,145 each term for a dorm room. They also need to purchase a resident meal plan for $2,195 or more every semester.
As soon as Barry gets a FAFSA, the university will design a financial aid package to meet the need demonstrated by the student on that form. Undergrads qualify for merit-based aid such as the scholarships that go to those with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a high standardized test score. They also qualify for need-based aid from the state and federal government, including Pell grants and subsidized loans. Graduate students can use unsubsidized loans and apply for jobs every year too. Financial aid is available in all of the counseling and psychology programs at Barry University.
