Students have a wealth of opportunities to study counseling and psychology at Andrews University with programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Studying at the undergraduate level means enrolling in one of five bachelor’s degree programs or a minor in psychology. Bachelor’s degrees include a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology: Pre-Professional, or a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.

Students can also pursue a Bachelor of Science in Psychology: Pre-Professional or a Bachelor of Science in Psychology: Brain & Cognition. Meanwhile, graduate degrees include the Master of Arts in School Counseling, the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, and the Ed.S. or Ph.D. in School Psychology.

The undergraduate degrees in psychology and counseling at Andrews University are offered on campus in Michigan, and students will need to complete around 120 credits to receive their bachelor’s degrees. Students in the B.S. and B.A. in Psychology programs will choose a general concentration or a pre-professional concentration, and the required classes for each are slightly different.

Classes that all undergraduate psychology majors will take include Human Development, Careers & Plans for the Psychology Major, and Introduction to Psychology. For the general concentration, students will take classes like Physiological Psychology and Dealing with Your Mind. Pre-professional students will have access to classes like Social Psychology, Psychology of Abnormal Behavior, and Theories of Personality.

Students in the graduate degree and doctoral degree programs in counseling from Andrews University usually enroll as full-time students. Some programs may be completed in as few as one or two years with full-time enrollment. For example, the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling requires completion of 60 credits. The program features classes offered with a nod toward Christian philosophy.

For the Master of Arts in Educational Psychology, students will complete 33 credits to earn their degree and may graduate in just one year. The Ph.D. program requires 90 credits and normally requires four years of full-time study. The university suggests that its programs offer students small class sizes and ready access to professors.

About Andrews University

Andrews University is affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church and is a private university located in Berrien Springs, Michigan. The school was founded in 1874, and its original name was Battle Creek College. The school was the first college ever created by the church and has also become the flagship institution of the church’s system of schools.

The university has eight divisions that offer around 130 undergraduate majors and 79 graduate majors. The university’s official colors are gold and blue. The campus in Berrien Springs is in a rural area and covers 1,600 acres. The ratio of students to teachers is 10:1. Around 3,300 students are enrolled for classes at the university, and students are divided somewhat equally between undergraduates and graduates. The sports teams at the university are nicknamed the Cardinals.

Andrews University Accreditation Details

Programs at Andrews University are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and this approval is an institutional-wide accreditation. The university is eligible to award bachelor’s and master’s degrees with regional accreditation. The university is also accredited by the Adventist Accrediting Association. There are several programs, schools, and departments at the university that are accredited by additional agencies, associations, and commissions.

The program in architecture is accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board and first received this approval in 2002 for its 5.5-year bachelor’s degree program. The School of Business Administration is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs. The seminary and all of its programs are fully accredited by The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.

Andrews University Application Requirements

Andrews University has several minimum application requirements that students must meet when they apply for admission if they want to gain unconditional acceptance. The college evaluates each student’s application on an individual basis. Standards include the completed application for admission, a $20 application fee, a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher, and an SAT score of at least 1000 or an ACT score of at least 19.

Students who do not meet the minimum scores on the SAT or ACT can gain conditional acceptance, but they must take the Accuplacer test to determine the severity of the student’s deficiency and to gain appropriate placement in first-year courses. The university also offers provisional acceptance to some students who don’t meet the minimum acceptance standards but who are willing to submit to an interview with the Enrollment Management Committee.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Andrews University is a private institution and charges the same rate for residents of Michigan and non-residents of the state. Undergraduate tuition for the year is $28,992.00 for 12 to 16 credits. Tuition for 11 or fewer credits is charged at $1,208.00 per credit. Tuition over 16 credits is charged at $985.00 per credit. A place in a residence hall will cost $4,900.00 per year, and the charge for a meal plan for the year is $3,700.00.

Books and supplies are estimated at $1,100.00 for the year, and general fees come to $1,166.00 per year. For graduate students, the university charges $1,164.00 per credit. Doctoral and Ed.S. students pay $1,316.00 per credit. Other fees paid by graduate students include a $474.00 general fee, a $15.00 activity fee, and a master’s thesis fee of $265.00. Some programs also require additional fees. For example, the Master of Divinity has a $3,240.00 registration fee.

Financial aid is available to students who attend Andrews University and demonstrate financial need. Students will receive a financial aid award from the Financial Aid Committee that may feature student loans, grants, and scholarships. Students who have a sibling or another family member attending classes at the same time at Andrews University may receive a family discount for tuition costs. Michigan students may also qualify for the Project Assist program, which is a tuition-matching program for church members.

To receive financial aid, students will fill out the official Application for Financial Aid from the university. The form asks parents to declare how much money they can pay for tuition and how much money they would like to receive in financial aid. Andrews University requires that families provide IRS tax returns for the previous year for proof of income.
