About A.T. Still University of Health Sciences

A.T. Still University of Health Sciences was founded in 1892 by Andrew Taylor Still. Dr. Still became a physician, learning under his father. There is no record Dr. Still ever receiving formal medical education. After serving in the Civil War, Dr. Still returned home in 1864 to learn that an epidemic of spinal meningitis had taken the lives of three of his children. His first wife, Mary Vaughn, had died in childbirth prior to his entering the war. One month after the epidemic, Dr. Still’s daughter with his second wife, Mary Elvira Turner, died of pneumonia. The deaths of his family led Dr. Still to reject what he learned about medicine and search for better methods to treat illness.Growing up a hunter, Dr. Still understood the basic structural relationship between bones, muscles, and organs. He became convinced that illnesses could be alleviated or cured without drugs if he could find the anatomical deviations that interfered with the flow of blood and what he termed the “nerve force” in the human body. His ideas were revolutionary for the time and were not well-received by the public nor Dr. Still’s family. He asked to present his beliefs at Baker University, a school that his family had helped found, but they denied him permission. Dr. Still left Kansas, traveling to Macon, Missouri, but did not gain acceptance their either. He moved to Kirksville where people began to listen and he was able to open a small practice in 1875.

His reputation grew as a doctor who was able to cure illness without drugs, officially named osteopathy in 1885. Dr. Still trained his children and a few others in the practice until, eventually, there were enough interested that he opened a school. The American School of Osteopathy was founded in a two-room frame building with a class of 16 men and five women. Three of the first students were children of Dr. Still and another was his brother.

Today, the school is comprised of two campuses in Kirksville, Missouri and Mesa, Arizona. It is known for its preeminence as a multidisciplinary healthcare education institute of higher learning. The school is founded on tenets of osteopathic methods as well as advancing today’s science. There are more than 3,700 students enrolled in the university with 77 percent attending full-time.
