The University of Memphis offers counseling and psychology degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The 21-credit School Counseling Graduate Certificate is intended for students pursuing a degree in clinical mental health counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, or college counseling. The courses include Principles of School Counseling, Child Counseling, Consultation and Intervention in Schools, School Counseling to Close Achievement Gap, Internship in Elementary School Counseling, and Internship in Secondary School Counseling.
The Master of Science in Counseling provides students with a broad base of knowledge in social and behavioral science, counseling abilities, research tools, and professional identity and function. A minimum of 48 semester hours is needed to complete the program. The core courses include Foundations of Counseling, Group Counseling Practices, Theories of Counseling, Assessment Techniques, Clinical Techniques, and Introduction to Educational Research. Students have the ability to select from four concentrations: Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, and School Counseling. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling concentrations require 60 semester hours.
The 60-credit Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision provides students with advanced professional counseling, counselor education, and counselor supervision concepts. The major courses include Counseling Residency Research Seminar, Teaching Counselor Education, Advanced Group Processes, Advanced Counseling Theory and Technology, Counselor Supervision, Practicum in Counseling, and Doctoral Internship in Counseling. Students must also complete a dissertation component.
The 18-credit educational psychology and research minor complements various education and psychology programs. The courses include Development Across the Lifespan, Learning Process/Assessment, Fundamental/Applied Statistical Method, Child/Adolescent Development, Directed Reading, Educational Psychology/Research, and Early Childhood Development/Beginning Teacher.
The 120-credit Bachelor of Arts in Psychology provides students with a solid understanding of the major applied areas of psychology. The major courses include General Psychology, Careers in Psychology, Research in Statistics, Psychology of Language, Child Psychology, Health Psychology, and Social Psychology. Students have the ability to select from three concentrations: General Psychology, Behavioral Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science. All students must also take a Psychology Field Test.
The 33-credit Master of Science in General Psychology provides students with an in-depth understanding of key psychological concepts. The courses include Research Design and Methods, Advanced Psychology Statistics, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Psychopathology, Child Psychopathology, Intro School Psychology, and Psychology of Human Memory. Students must also complete a thesis or specialty paper component.
The 36-credit Master of Science in Educational Psychology and Research provides students with a solid knowledge base for critical thinking in human development, educational research methods and statistics, and cognitive processes related to education. The courses include Introduction to Educational Research, Educational Qualitative Methods, Statistical Methods in Applied Education, Learning and Cognition, Childhood Development in Digital Age, and Life Span Human Development. Students must also take a comprehensive examination.
The 36-credit Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology provides students with the knowledge of a scientific approach to understanding and working with general issues within human behavior. The courses include Counseling Psychology Foundations/Professional Issues, Advocacy, Consultation, and Ethics, Adult Personality Assessment, Adult Cognitive Assessment, Statistical Methods, Research Design Analysis, Seminar in Group Counseling Psychology, and Multicultural Counseling.
The 54-credit Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Psychology and Research prepares leaders for postsecondary teaching, applied research, and other professional roles in human development. The courses include Learning and Cognition, Motivation, Statistical Methods, Qualitative Methods, Research Design Analysis, Psychology of Aging, and Cultural Diverse Students. A comprehensive examination and dissertation are also required for the degree.
The Master of Science/Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology is an advanced degree program that involves research and understanding theoretical principles and practices of psychology. A minimum of 33 semester hours is needed to complete the master’s degree component and 80 semester hours to complete the doctoral degree. The degree includes research, master’s thesis and comprehensive examination, milestone project, dissertation, and final examination. The courses include Research Design and Methods, Advanced Statistics in Psychology, Linear Structure Modeling, Models Program Evaluation, Psychology of Perception, Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognitive Processes, Social Psychology, Qualitative Research in Psychology. The 30-credit Education Specialist School Psychology provides with an advanced understanding of the nature of educational settings and prepares them to work cooperatively with students, parents, school staff, and other professionals. The courses include Research Design and Methods, Advanced School Psychology Interventions, Measurement and Evaluation, Individual Differences, Internship in School Psychology.
