Counseling and Psychology Degrees Offered at Rice University

Rice University offers a number of degrees in psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students can earn graduate degrees in cognitive and affective neuroscience, human factors and human-computer interaction, industrial-organizational psychology and psychometrics and quantitative psychology. Undergraduates earn degrees in general psychology.
Most of the school’s psychology programs and classes are on campus. However, there are some online classes that would benefit students who are studying human-computer interaction. These courses include Computational Thinking and other programming classes.
Undergraduate course requirements include Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Cognitive Psychology and Research Methods. Graduate students can take classes, like Computer Applications in Psychology, Information Processing and Attention, Psycholinguistics, Advanced Cognitive Neuroscience: Attention and Perception, Personnel Psychology and Organizational Psychology.
About Rice University
Rice University has quite the pedigree. The US News and World Report ranks it 17th in its National Universities category, 8th on its Best Undergraduate Teaching list and 13th in terms of best value. The 300-acre campus of this private university sits in the heart of Houston, Texas.
Students attend Rice University to take advantage of its small class sizes: There’s a 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio. Kennedy’s speech encouraging scientists to send a man to the moon took place right in Rice’s football stadium.
As a result of all of this, attending rice is an engaging experience for students. Rice University’s Emerging Scholars Program provides support for first-generation college students, helping them to achieve academic goals and advance in their careers.
Academically, it has a storied history. It’s the place to go to study space science: The school was the first in the country to have a department dedicated specifically to this science. Former professors include former President George H.W. Bush, as well as Nobel Prize winners Richard Smalley, Sir Harold Kroto and Robert Curl to name but a few. Former students include author Larry McMurty of “Lonesome Dove” fame here, as did astronaut Peggy Whitson.
Life on Rice’s campus isn’t all academics and research. Students here can take advantage of their proximity to the Museum District to see the latest in the art world. They can ride the MetroRail (for free as Rice University students) to go out to dinner with friends. Ballet, theater and other live entertainment acts fill Rice students’ evening with the magic that only live theatrical experiences can provide. Student surveys show that Rice students feel very happy about being on campus, a fact that’s backed up by the school’s graduation rate: About 92% of all students graduate.

Rice University receives its accreditation from the Schools Commission on Colleges and the Southern Association of Colleges. This accreditation allows Rice to confer bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees to its students.

Rice University Application Requirements
Rice University admits freshman, transfer and graduate students. Freshman students must submit an application, plus a $75 application fee; a high school transcript; their standardized test scores; a school report and two teacher evaluations. They can also participate in an optional personal interview. Freshman students are also expected to submit a personal essay. Applications for undergraduate transfer students require similar materials.
Rice Graduate Admissions Office recommends that potential graduate students speak to the department they’d like to apply to in order to learn specific department requirements.
The school does have some general application requirements. Students need to submit official transcripts from all of the universities they’ve attended; an $85 application fee; a GRE score (or the scores for other applicable tests); a portfolio; letters of recommendation; a statement of purpose and writing samples.
International applicants must also fulfill the school’s IELTS or TOEFL requirements unless they attended an English-speaking school.
Tuition and Financial Aid
It is the goal of Rice University to help students reach their academic goals. This includes a commitment to provide need-blind admission to all domestic students. The school also commits to covering 100% of students’ demonstrated financial needs (for students who are admitted to the school).
If a student’s parents earn less than $65,000 a year, that student receives not only a grant to cover his or her full tuition, he or she also receives money to cover the school’s mandatory fees, plus the student’s room and board costs. Students whose parents earn $130,000 or less receive grants to cover full tuition costs. Students whose parents earn between $130,000 and $200,000 get half of their tuition covered. It’s student aid packages like this that allow Rice University to consistently rank as one of America’s best values in education. Students can also receive work-study funds and student loans.
Graduate students are charged $2,685 per credit or $24,165 per semester. The annual tuition cost for Rice University is $48,300. Graduate-level fees cost an additional $617 per year.
There is an additional charge for students in the Masters of Human-Computer Interaction and Human Factors, which is one of the school’s graduate-level psychology degrees. Students in this program pay $29,000 per semester or $58,000 per year for tuition. They also pay the additional $617 in student fees.
Undergraduates pay $24,165 per semester and $48,330 per annum for tuition. Student fees cost $224 per year. Room and board runs $14,140 per year. They may also be charged additional fees for individual courses.
Rice students who want to be considered for financial aid can fill out a FAFSA form and submit it to the school’s financial aid office. Any external scholarships and grants that the student earns should be reported to the Rice University financial aid office.
