Counseling and Psychology Programs Offered at Ohio University

The Department of Psychology at Ohio University offers several psychology degree programs. Students can learn the fundamentals of psychology and develop the skills they need in a graduate program through the university’s Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. It includes both required university classes and 35 credits of psychology classes, including Research Methods in Psychology, General Psychology, Social Psychology and Child and Adolescent Psychology. Students have the chance to work with their professors and peers on research projects and other special projects.
Two other programs offered by the university are suitable for undergrads. One is the pre-physical therapy psychology program. It prepares students for the university’s doctoral program and for working with patients. Students must complete the psychology core and maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher before they can apply to the program. They’ll then take courses that include Human Physiology, Introduction to Physical Therapy and Fundamentals of Chemistry. Ohio University also offers the BA in Psychology program online. This program only accepts students who already made progress towards a bachelor’s degree.
Ohio University offers two doctoral programs that accept students who have a bachelor’s degree in psychology or another social sciences area. The clinical psychology program expects students to do several internships and to complete fieldwork in clinical settings. They will take classes such as Advanced Research Methods, Cognitive Processes, and Developmental Psychology. The experimental psychology doctoral program features five specializations, including cognitive psychology and health psychology. Students in either doctoral program must take a comprehensive exam halfway through their studies and pass that exam to remain in the university. They’ll also do a thesis at some point in the program and submit a dissertation later.
Through the university’s College of Education, students can earn a Master of Education in Counselor Education. This program asks students to spend 100 hours in the field to complete a practicum and an extra 600 hours to finish an internship. They can choose from specializations in school counseling, clinical mental health counseling or clinical mental health and rehabilitation counseling. The university also offers a doctoral program in counselor education and supervision. This program features both fieldwork and classes as well as a dissertation. Students also have the option of earning credits through one of the university’s study abroad programs.

Ohio University Accreditation Details
One of the most important forms of accreditation that the university holds for students majoring in counseling comes from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). It applies to both the counselor education programs at the graduate and doctoral levels. The APA accredited the OU clinical psychology doctoral program too. OU also obtained regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

Ohio University Application Requirements
OU has just two steps that prospective undergrads need to follow. The first step relates to the application and asks students to both submit an application and pay the fee charged by the university. This fee is $20 for undergrads. Students can visit the OU campus and complete the application in person. On Wednesdays, the university does not charge an application fee. Students will then submit their transcripts. OU asks for transcripts from all colleges and high schools attended.
The main requirements for graduate students applying to a counseling or psychology program include:
- A GPA of 3.0 in all college classes taken or a minimum GPA of 3.3 in all psychology classes taken
- A bachelor’s degree from a university with HLC accreditation or another type of regional accreditation
OU also asks for a GRE score and strongly recommends that those without a psychology degree take and submit scores from the psychology subject area of the GRE. They will then provide transcripts and a personal statement that includes the interests they have in psychology and their career goals. OU requires a resume and three letters of recommendation too. Those letters should come from the student’s psychology and/or social sciences teachers.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The OHIO Guarantee is a special program that OU and other schools in the state offer. It keeps tuition rates low and makes the expenses that students face more affordable, including the cost of room and board. This program locks in rates and allows students to pay the same rate for all 12 semesters that they spend at the university. Undergrads taking classes on the Athens campus pay $12,192 each year, but this rate increases to $21,656 per year for nonresidents. Undergrads also pay $12,900 each year for room and board. Graduate students pay $583 per credit hour as an Ohio resident or $1,079 per credit hour as a nonresident. Both of these rates include all fees. The university reduces the price to between $334 and $628 per credit hour for residents and nonresidents who take more than 18 credit hours of classes.
OU wants students to graduate with less debt, which is why it offers scholarships and grants for all types of students. Signature awards range from $1,000 to $28,000 a year and will stack on top of the government aid that most students get. They can renew these awards every year and get funds that cover their living expenses and their classes. All of the counseling and psychology degree programs at Ohio University offer financial aid packages for new and continuing students.
