Nova Southeastern University Counseling and Psychology Degree Offerings

The College of Psychology at Nova Southeastern University oversees all degree offerings in counseling and psychology. Degrees are offered in three primary concentrations: clinical and school psychology, counseling, and psychology and neuroscience. The school offers undergraduate minors in psychology, psychology for health sciences, applied behavior analysis, behavioral neuroscience, and forensic studies. Bachelor of science degrees are awarded psychology and behavioral neuroscience.

NSU’s graduate degrees are more specialized. A Master of Science degree is available in Counseling, Experimental Psychology, Forensic Psychology, and General Psychology. Students can also earn a specialized certificate in School Psychology. The Master’s Degree programs are offered entirely online so that busy professionals looking at expanding their careers have the opportunity to do so.

Four doctoral programs are also available. The Clinical Psychology Ph.D. is based on a scientist-practitioner model and focuses primarily on analysis of current topics and problems in health service psychology. The Clinical Psy.D. program is for students who want to enter directly into the clinical services area and start a medical psychology practice. This program offers academic, practicum, internship and research experience directly applicable to practitioners. A third degree involves a Psy.D. in School Psychology. This program focuses on preparing students to address the behavioral, social, and emotional needs of students, their families, and educational personnel.

The Master’s Program in General Psychology is offered entirely online. The curriculum in this program is designed to encourage students to pursue advanced doctoral work.

About Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University is a relatively new institution of higher learning, especially when compared with other colleges and universities in the United States. The school got its start in Fort Lauderdale in 1964 as a small college with some revolutionary ideas. It was originally a graduate institution in the physical and social sciences. By 1994, Nova University merged with Southeastern University of Health Sciences to form NSU. The school is classified as a “high research university and is only one of 50 universities in the United States that has Carnegie’s Community Engagement Classification. NSU also meets the federal criteria as a Hispanic serving institution.

Nova Southeastern University Accreditation Details

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has accredited Nova Southeastern University to award associate’s, baccalaureate, master’s, educational specialist, doctoral and professional degrees. In addition, the Florida Department of Education accredits the Master’s Degree in School Counseling as well as the post-graduate certificate program. The school psychology program on the doctorate level is also accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). The Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association accredits the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. The Psy.D. Program in Clinical Psychology is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association.

Nova Southeastern University Application Requirements

Undergraduate admission requirements at NSU have an overall A-/B+ high school grade average. SAT test scores range from 1070 to 1290 for combined math and critical reading only. ACT composite test scores range from 22 to 28. NSU does not requirements for courses taken in high school as part of their freshman admission requirements.

For graduate psychology and counseling students, all applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, education or a related field. Other requirements include:

  • Passing grade on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT)

Other requirements for the graduate program include a $50 application fee, a general GPA of 3.0 over all of the student’s courses for the past two years and three hours of completed undergraduate coursework in Research or evaluation and statistics. Students may also be admitted to the school’s psychology programs on a provisional basis if they do not have the correct number of documents available for submission. These documents must be submitted within 90 days of the provisional admission.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition at Nova Southeastern is $14,970 per semester. This figure does not take into account room and board and fees that the school charges for enrollment. For students pursuing a master’s degree in psychology, that tuition is $755 per credit hour without fees. Tuition for doctoral programs in psychology is $1110 per credit hour. Admitted students will also have to pay a variety of fees that will amount to several hundred dollars. Course-specific fees can range up to $275.

A variety of Florida and Federal grant programs are available to help students fund their education. Undergraduates can apply for the following:

Available Federal scholarships include Pell Grants, Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship, TEACH Grants, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant.

NSU also provides some merit-based scholarships that are contingent upon a student’s high school grades and standardized test scores. These include the NSU President’s and Premier Scholarships for students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability. Depending on test scores, applicants may receive scholarships that fund up to the full cost of their tuition. The Dean’s Scholarship is also part of this program and is also based on past academic achievement. Other undergraduate scholarships available for psychology and counseling students include the Razor’s Edge Program, which awards up to $22,000 for first-time college students passionate about leadership and service.

Graduate students have a choice of more than 15 scholarships to help fund their master’s or doctoral degrees in psychology. In addition, the school has over 150 different graduate scholarships for graduate students, some of which are not specific to the student’s area of student and may be used for any time of study.
