At Gulick Hall, Hobart & William Smith Colleges offers a Psychology Major (B.A./B.S.) with a 10:1 student-faculty ratio for learning the cognitive and social processes that underlie people’s behaviors. Chaired by Dr. Julie Newman Kingery, the 2016 CTL Innovative Teaching Grant recipient, this 32-credit, four-year curriculum requires 11-16 disciplinary courses like Child Psychology and Topics in Personality. Minors, including social justice and community development, are available. Upperclassmen must complete 120+ contact hours at internship sites, such as the Happiness House, Finger Lakes Health, Victor Primary School, Riverside Outpatient Clinic, and Hillside Family Center. Majors might also attend the Society of Behavioral Medicine Conference, join Psi Chi, semester in Maastricht, research in Fisher Center, and enter the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program. HWS Herons have 90 percent placement success with Harvard, Loyola, Syracuse, Tufts, Fairleigh Dickinson, and other graduate schools.

About Hobart & William Smith Colleges

Hobart & William Smith Colleges originated on May 3, 1796, when Rev. Henry Axtell met with three commissioners in Seneca to establish Geneva Academy for Genesee County settlers. Chartered by New York State in March 1813, Geneva Academy was soon closed in 1817. Five years later, John Henry Hobart funded the building of Geneva College nearby. In 1834, Edward Cutbush created Geneva Medical College to train physicians. In 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell notably became the first female M.D. graduate in the United States here. In 1852, Geneva College was renamed in honor of its Episcopal bishop founder. On December 13, 1906, the William Smith School for Women welcomed an inaugural class of 18 ladies to Geneva. In 1922, Hobart & William Smith Colleges starting holding joint commencements. In 1943, HWS joined the Naval V-12 Training Program. In 1986, HWS developed its core liberal arts curriculum. By 2002, Hobart & William Smith Colleges had the first LGBT/queer studies major.

Hobart & William Smith Colleges Accreditation Details

On June 26, 2014, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) informed Hobart & William Smith Colleges that the Level III accreditation status was satisfactorily reaffirmed without sanctions through the next 2023-24 evaluation under President Joyce P. Jacobsen, Ph.D., who accepted the Binswanger Prize for Excellence in Teaching. Located 276 miles down Interstate 476 in Philadelphia, this superb six-state Northeast Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Education Department to review HWS’s 45 baccalaureate majors, 68 minors, and Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Hobart & William Smith Colleges Application Requirements

Admission to Hobart & William Smith Colleges is classified as “very selective” by Peterson’s since only 2,578 of the 4,533 Fall 2018 applicants were chosen for 42 percent acceptance. First-year Herons pursuing the Psychology Major (B.A./B.S.) must have acquired a high school diploma or GED certificate. Completing an NYS Regents curriculum or 22-unit, college-prep equivalent is preferred. The Class of 2022 reported an average secondary GPA of 3.43. Mid-range admitted SAT scores were 620-690 for reading and 590-680 for math. The middle 50th percentile had ACT scores of 26-30. Since 2006, Hobart & William Smith has been test-optional for holistic reviews though. Psychology Department transfers must have at least two years remaining. A maximum of 16 accredited three-credit courses graded C or greater are eligible for transfer. International learners from non-English countries need at least 6.5 IELTS or 80 TOEFL iBT scores. The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program is reserved for New York residents with a household income of $80,346 or less.

Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program. The Presidential Scholarship for Inclusive Excellence gifts $35,000 annually to freshmen with minimum 1370 SAT or 30 ACT scores. The $25,000 Centennial Center Scholarship assists community service leaders with cumulative GPAs above 3.5. Federal resources, such as the Pell Grant and Work-Study Award, require FAFSA applications coded 002731.
