Henderson State University offers three ways to study counseling and psychology that include an undergraduate degree in Psychology and two graduate degrees, which are in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. Some of the industries available to graduates with a degree in psychology include those in counseling, management, research, human resources, and public service. Some of the courses a student may take in the undergraduate degree program in psychology include Abnormal Psychology, Personality, Developmental Psychology, and Forensic Psychology. Students can choose to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology or a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.
The bachelor of science degree requires extra math classes, and the bachelor of arts degree requires that students pursue work in a foreign language. Students may wish to consider declaring a minor in the complementary area of Human Diversity. Students who already have a bachelor’s degree can consider either of the two graduate-level counseling programs at Henderson State University. The Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling is an excellent option for students who want to work with community outreach, mediation, advocacy and specialized areas dealing with the elderly or children. Students will take classes like Case Management, Psychopathology, Counseling Children, and Family Systems.
Knowledge gained in the program can be used to help patients with depression, addiction, substance abuse, trauma, anxiety, grief, and low self-esteem. To complete the program, students must take 45 semester hours in general counseling areas, as well as 9 hours in counseling electives. Classes specific to the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program include Family Counseling & Parent Education, Advanced Play Therapy, and Special Problems in Counseling. The other graduate counseling degree program at Henderson State University is one in School Counseling and requires the same 45 semester hours of general counseling classes, as well as 12 additional semester hours in school counseling classes.
Some of the classes a student will take when they specialize in School Counseling include Case Management School, Professional School Counseling, and two internships. The school’s programs are offered in a hybrid format where some classes are offered on the university’s campus, and other programs are offered online. For example, during the first semester of the graduate degree programs in counseling, students will take Research & Program Evaluation in a hybrid format, Assessment in Counseling through via online delivery, and Theories of Counseling on campus. About Henderson State University
Known as Arkadelphia Methodist College when it was founded in 1890, Henderson State University would operate as a Methodist institution for the first 39 years. In the early 1900s, the school would transform into a public, state school and would become Henderson State College in 1967. The school underwent significant expansion in the first half of the century, and the present-day campus covers 151 acres. The school’s motto is “The School With A Heart,” and the school’s official colors are gray and red. Students who play in sports do so in NCAA Division II games in the Great American Conference, and the teams are nicknamed the Reddies. There are around 3,500 students attending classes at the university, which also operates a public-access television station and a local radio station. The university also has a school newspaper that has seen continuous publication since 1908.

Henderson State University Application Requirements
Students interested in attending Henderson State University as an undergraduate student must achieve an ACT Composite score of at least 20 to gain unconditional admission. Students with ACT scores between 16 and 19 can gain conditional admission and will need to participate in a special program administered by the university. After applying to the university, students must have their final high school transcripts sent to the university, as well as a Certification of Immunization. Students who want to study at the graduate level will begin with the official Application for Admission and will need to submit official transcripts from the college where the student earned his or her bachelor’s degree. After gaining admission to the university, students may need to submit additional items as required by the student’s chosen program. Tuition and Financial Aid
In-state tuition at Henderson State University is $221 per credit hour, and out-of-state tuition is $276 per credit hour.
