Counseling and Psychology Degree Programs Available at the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania

Through the Psychology Department at the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Majors can join Psi Chi, which is a national honors society for psychology majors and other organizations such as the American Counseling Association (ACA). There are also internship opportunities available for students who want to do volunteer work in addiction centers, hospitals, nonprofit organizations, and other settings. Psychology majors must take Research Writing, Experimental Psychology, and other classes. They can also minor in gerontology and take classes such as Psychology of Adulthood and Aging, Anthropology of Aging and End of Life Care.
The Edinboro University of Pennsylvania offers counseling programs through its Counseling, School Psychology and Special Education Department. These are all graduate programs and include a Master of Arts in Counseling. Students will take 30 credits of core counseling classes and at least 30 credits from a concentration in college, clinical mental health, school or clinical rehabilitation counseling. Their required courses include Group Processes, Supervised Clinical Practice, Organization and Development of Programs in the Helping Professions, and either Research in Education or Research Seminar in Guidance and Counseling.
The university’s Master of Education in Educational Psychology includes 30 credits of classes also. Students will take the same 21 credits of core courses, including Collaborative Consultation in Educational Settings, Learning Theories, Research in Educational Psychology and Special Education and Crisis Management and Violence Prevention in Schools. The remaining credits come from the electives that the university offers. These electives allow students to pick classes based on their personal and professional goals. They can include Introduction to School Psychology, Seminar in Mild to Moderate Disabilities, Individual Development: Childhood Through Adolescence and Applied Behavior Analysis.
Students can also earn an Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology. It provides students with training that helps them see topics and issues from the point of view of others and lets them work with students struggling with emotional and other problems. All students will follow the same outline, which includes classes taken in the fall, spring and summer semesters. They will do a practicum in the second year and an internship in the third year. Students need to review their internships with their advisors and take a comprehensive exam at the end of the program. They’ll also take classes that include Human Development Across the Lifespan, Crisis Management and Violence Prevention, Seminar in Education and Psychology Research and Foundations of Literacy.
About the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
The Edinboro University of Pennsylvania is a public university that also uses the names Edinboro University and just Edinboro. Established as a training institute for teachers in 1857 called Edinboro Academy, it was one of the first schools of its type in the region. The Scottish immigrants who moved west started the school as a way to offer career opportunities for other settlers and to help their children. It would become the Northwest State Normal School in later years and then both Edinboro State Teachers College and Edinboro State College. It now pays homage to its Scottish roots with a bag-piping program, which is the only one in the country. The more than 4,000 students attending Edinboro can join more than 100 clubs and organizations on its Pennsylvania campus.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Accreditation Details
Some of the programs available at Edinboro that have accreditation include those in education, art, nursing, design, dietetics and speech and language pathology. Most of its counseling programs have accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) too. Thanks to the regional accreditation it holds from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), Edinboro can also grant financial aid packages to those who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on time.
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Application Requirements
Students applying to one of the graduate counseling programs must submit transcripts that show they took at least 12 credits of behavioral and social science classes at the undergraduate or graduate level. They can show that they took those prerequisite classes through their transcripts, which should also show that they completed their bachelor’s degrees. Edinboro charges a $30 application fee that is due when the student finishes the application. It also has an essay component that asks students to write 500 to 750 words on they want to study one area of counseling at the university and how their past experiences will help them in that program. Edinboro may contact students and ask that they interview with someone from the counseling department too. The school psychology program also asks for three letters of recommendation.
Undergrads applying to Edinboro can access the application on July first after they finish their junior years in high school. The university is test-optional and does not require an ACT/SAT score but allows students to send one. They will also need to provide their high school transcripts and transcripts if they earned any AP or IB credits. Undergrads can use the Edinboro application or the Common Application, both of which charge the same $30 fee.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Between tuition and fees, Pennsylvania undergrads attending Edinboro pay $5,271 per semester, which increases to $7,531 per semester for nonresidents. This allows undergrads to take 12 credits up to 18 credits of courses each semester. Students also have the option of taking online classes for between $4,577 and $5,293 per semester based on their residency statuses. Graduate students who are Pennsylvania residents pay $680 per credit hour for their traditional classes and $625 per credit hour for their online classes. Nonresident graduate students pay between $936 and $991 per credit hour depending on whether they take classes online or on the Edinboro campus.
With nine scholarships available just for psychology majors, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania makes it easy for students to afford its overall cost of attendance. Those scholarships go to students who complete a scholarship application and submit their test scores. Students can combine their scholarships with government aid such as subsidized loans and a Pell grant, but they can also qualify for work-study.
