Students who want to study counseling or psychology online have a number of different options available to them when they choose Capella University. Capella offers both a BS in Psychology and a BS in Psychology in Pre-Counseling. The first program provides students with a solid foundation in psychology. Those enrolled in the second program will learn the skills necessary in a counseling graduate program. Undergrads can also earn a psychology certificate from the university while working on a bachelor’s degree.
There are also two Master of Science programs available online in Psychology or Clinical Psychology. The clinical psychology program features the practical training that students need before they actually work with patients. They can pick a concentration in applied research, clinical counseling, or forensic psychology. The general psychology graduate program features other concentrations, including sport psychology and industrial/organizational psychology.
Capella offers three doctoral programs too. Students can earn a Doctor of Psychology, a Ph.D. in Psychology (with a specialization in education psychology, behavioral analysis, and more) or a Doctor of Psychology in School Psychology. Each program features courses such as Strategies of Clinical Supervision and Consultation and Evidence-Based Practice in Psychology. The university expects students to work with their assigned mentors to complete all program requirements and as they work on their dissertations. These programs also give students professional experience in the form of fieldwork that they do in their own areas and regions.
The university added four counseling graduate programs to its curriculum over the years too. It has a Master of Science in Addiction Studies that prepares students for working with patients in rehabilitation centers and similar facilities. This program starts every fall and features classes that include Survey of Research in Human Development for Addiction Professionals, Principles of Integrated Addiction and Mental Health Treatment and Ethical and Legal Issues in Addiction Treatment.
Students who want to work with other types of patients might consider the university’s Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Designed for those who want to work with a wide range of patients, it features courses such as Introduction to Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Child and Adolescent Counseling, Crisis Assessment and Intervention and Life Planning and Career Development. Capella also offers Master of Science programs in both Marriage and Family Therapy and School Counseling.
All the graduate and doctoral programs offered online have professors with years of experience working with and teaching students. Most of those professors have either a doctoral degree or a terminal degree in their fields. All of the top counseling programs require that students do fieldwork, which helps them understand the basics of working with patients. Capella University can help students find placements based on where they live.

Though Capella now accepts all types of students, it gives priority to undergrads who already took some college credits. Students who do not transfer any credits must take an exam that tests their skills and knowledge in different areas. The university uses their scores to determine if the student can handle college work and where those students can start in specific areas such as math and science.
